A. HAPPY THANKSGIVING. I feel so lucky to be in the book publishing
business. Publishers are helpful, friendly and supportive because our
books are unique. We conspire to sell more books, we do not compete. Thank
you for your enormous help, overwhelming inspiration and continual friendship.
B. UPS RATES TO RISE IN JANUARY; Postal Service likely to hold rates
until 2006. UPS will increase rates 2.9 to 3.9 percent with the residential
surcharge changing from $1.10 to $1.15. UPS also applies an index-based
fuel surcharge to its shipments that is adjusted monthly. FedEx is expected
to follow.

D. BEWARE OF EULA AND TERMS & CONDITIONS. Those cute little electronic
greeting cards you occasionally get from friends may be a real problem.
There's a new card company called "FriendGreetings.com". When
you get a card notification from them and click on the link, it will take
you to their site. You will be notified that you have to install an ActiveX
control in order to view the card. When you begin to install, the first
thing that pops up is what is known as a "EULA" (End User License
Agreement). It is very long, and you are not likely to read it.
They're counting on that. When you scroll to the bottom of it and click
"Accept," you have agreed to the terms of the EULA.
Part of what you will have agreed to is to have monitoring/spyware software
installed on your computer which will periodically report a vast array
of data back to the card company. The other part that you've agreed to
is to have the software send mail to every single address in your address
book. In short, you've voluntarily agreed to install a virus-type product
on your machine.

Since there is no virus in the email, and since you are voluntarily agreeing
to install the activex component, virus checkers will not catch this.
Do not run anything from the internet which requires a EULA agreement.
The sad part is - by clicking on "I Agree" - you do - and it's
legal!"
E. TRAVEL PUBLISHERS. Show your books at the Los Angeles Times Travel
Show, February 1 and 2 in Long Beach. The Times people expect about 15,000
visitors, 1000 travel agents, and some 800 exhibitors.
The International Publishers Alliance is inviting other publishers to
participate in a booth. If you have travel books or books of interest
to travelers (novels, current events, history, self-help, children) and

MAKE YOUR WRITING COMPELLING; The written word should be powerful.
Your nonfiction should not only inform, it should move your reader to
action. Too much writing explains how to do something but it does not
motivate the reader to do it.
In June 1999, three Jewish synagogues in Sacramento, California, were
firebombed early on a Friday morning. Two of the structures received relatively
minor damage, but the third attack destroyed the 5,000-volume library
at B’nai Israel. The library had been the treasure of the congregation.
That night, the Friday Sabbath Service was held in the 2,000-seat community
theatre. More than 1,800 people of all faiths attended to show support.
The United Methodist Church was holding a convention in town. When they
heard of the firebombing, they decided to attend the Jewish service—and
they took up a special offering. The Methodists presented a check for
$6,000. Initially, the audience was stunned and silent; then they broke
into continuous applause.
Author-publisher Alan Canton was so deeply moved, he wrote the story
eloquently and posted it to some book-publishing listservs and newsgroups
on the Internet. Readers were so motivated, they sent money and forwarded
the story on to other book friends. The message spread around the world
at the speed of email. Envelopes and checks poured in at the rate of two
and three hundred per day. Three months later, Canton had collected over
$201,000 for Congregation B’nai Israel.
