A. COLORADO GOVERNOR HONORS PUBLISHERS. November has been declared Colorado
Independent Publishers Month. The Colorado Independent Publishers Association
(CIPA) spearheaded the effort.
B. CONSUMERS ARE SPENDING MORE FOR ONLINE CONTENT. IDC estimates that
spending for online content worldwide will total more than USD50 billion
in 2002. See
http://www.nua.com/surveys/index.cgi?f=VS&art_id=905358239&rel=true
C. OUR SUBSCRIBER LIST JUST CROSSED 14,000. One of our goals is to reach
15,000 by the first of the year. Please forward this newsletter to writing
and publishing colleagues in your address book. They will thank you.
D. AMAZON SALES OF USED BOOKS INCREASE. Sales by third parties of previously-owned
books and other items totaled 23% of Amazon's North American third-quarter
unit sales. This was up from 16% in last year's third quarter.
E. WHAT DO SURFERS VIEW MOST ONLINE? See
http://www.e-tactics.com/Chart3_files/slide0004.htm
F. INGRAM FEES. Ingram Book Company has long charged publishers and distributors
a quarterly stocking fee for each title that Ingram carries. Beginning
1/1/03, Ingram will change the policy to charge a fee of $50 per new title
added. There are two good bits of news here. First, Ingram will no longer
charge the quarterly stocking fee for all books carried. Second, publishers
and distributors now have the option to spend a certain percentage of
sales in advertising with Ingram and have those funds apply to the title
fees. While each publisher will have to decide the best option for their
business, Ingram's flexibility and willingness to change could be a good
sign of things to come.

G. AMAZON EXPANDS INTO APPAREL. Ruby is the new Apparel and Accessories
store with over 400 major clothing brands (including Gap, Old Navy, Nordstrom,
Lands' End, Target, Eddie Bauer, Foot Locker, and many more). Amazon's
goal is to provide complete apparel selection and offer it the Amazon
way--with easy navigation, a single shopping cart, your ordering and payment
information already on file, etc.

K. CALIFORNIA WESTERN FREIGHT SHUTS DOWN. The low-cost trucker that carried
books from the Mid-West to the West Coast is no more. Margaret Clifton
who represented them now works with Clipper Express. She has negotiated
the same steep discounts and the same service. For details, contact her
at owwnedson@aol.com
L. 121 DIRECT SHUTS DOORS. Ken Hoffmann's digital printing company in
Valencia, California, is apparently closed.
M. WHAT IS AMAZON THINKING? They have been discounting some bestselling
books 30% for the past five months. Jeff Bezos promised to turn a profit
by the end of the year. For example, the brand new edition of The Self-Publishing
Manual is selling for 30% off or $13.96. Incredible! How long can this
last?

A. WANT INTERNET EXPLORER TO GIVE YOU A "TIP OF THE DAY"? Click
the Help menu and then click the Tip of the Day command. You'll see Internet
Explorer tips at the bottom of the browser. To make it go away, click
the Help menu again and click the Tip of the Day command.
B. FTP TIPS: The basics on File Transfer Protocol and tricks it can do:
http://hotwired.lycos.com@54.vg/2375
And you can use FTP through AOL. There is no need to get special software.
For details: at AOL, click on HELP and type in FTP.
C. THINKING OF BUYING AN OFFICE MACHINE? If you are in the market for
a fax, copier, etc., check out the reviews on amazon.com first. The reviewers/mavens
provide valuable assessments and advice.
D. USB DRIVES ARE REPLACING DISKS. USB plug-ins, such as the Thumb Drive
are smaller and do not have moving parts. They may be used for backups
and for moving files from one computer to another.

F. USE THE KEYBOARD TO COPY A URL. To send URLs to your friends or save
them to a file, you can click the address bar in the browser and select
the entire URL, but some of them get awfully long and it makes drag selecting
a real bummer. Try this out:
1. Go to a Web page in Internet Explorer.
2. Press the F6 key on your keyboard. That will cause the entire URL to
be highlighted in the address bar.
3. Press the CTRL key and hold it down. Now press the letter C on the
keyboard (this is the CTRL+C keyboard combination). This copies the highlighted
text to the clipboard
4. Go to where you want to save the URL and hold down the CTRL key and
then press the V key (the CTRL+V keyboard combination). This pastes the
URL into the document.
There you go! You copied and pasted the URL without your hands ever leaving
the keyboard.

G. CHECK OUT YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED. See

H. ADD A SIGNATURE TO YOUR OUTGOING EMAIL MESSAGES. You are an author
and/or a publisher. You want people to know who you are, what your do
and how to find you. Most email programs have a system to append an address
block to every email you send. If you use Outlook, AOL or some other system,
click on Help and search for Signature.
If you have a business card, you need a signature at the end of your email
messages.
I. IF YOUR COLLEAGUES HAVE A HOTMAIL or AOL ACCOUNT, remind them of the
new spam filters. Often messages to more than one person are sent to the
JUNK folder. Tell them to go to JUNK, find our Publishing Poynters newsletter
and click on
This is Not Junk.

To your address book.
Of course, if you have a hotmail or AOL account, you are SOL; you are
probably not receiving this tip.

LEARN TO SELL
Writing a book is a creative act.
A finished book is a product.
Selling a book is a business.
Some writers feel that they are creative people and do not want to dirty
their hands with the crass commercialism of selling their wares. Wake
up! Your book has to be sold—many times.
Dan Millman (Way of the Peaceful Warrior) reminds us: “Amateur
writers may have exceptional skills and talent, but they write for self-expression.
Professional writers know they are creating a product to sell in the literary
marketplace—a product that has to appeal to enough people who are
willing to exchange money for words.
“Your book is not sold just once; it has to be sold up to eight
times.
First, you sell it to yourself.
Second, you sell it to an agent.
Third, your agent sells it to an editor.
Fourth, your editor must sell it to the editorial board.
Fifth, the publisher must sell it to the sales force.
Sixth, the sales force needs to sell it to the stores.
Seventh comes the final glorious sale—to your readers.
Eighth, your readers will sell it by word of mouth to other readers.”
http://www.DanMillman.com
To become a professional writer, you need to be good at what you do and
you need to be good at selling what you do.
“When you market your writing, you are in sales. Think accordingly.
Act accordingly.”

A. A HACKER MEETS A PAPERCLIP:

B. WHY THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS HARD TO LEARN
Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger, neither apple nor pine
in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find
that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig
is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't
groce and hammers don't ham?
If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?
One goose, two geese. So one moose, two meese?
One index, two indices?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all English speakers should be committed to an asylum
for the verbally insane.
In what language do people recite a play and play at a recital?
Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?
Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and
a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house
can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it
out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people and not computers and it reflects the
creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.
That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights
are out, they are invisible.
Why doesn't BUICK rhyme with QUICK?
And finally, how about when you want to shut down your computer you have
to hit "START" ?
